This week: IDC predicted the server market will continue on its bullish growth path through at least 2008; the ASF brought Object/Relational Bridge one step closer to its production release; and Zeus revved Zeus Web Server to version 4.3.
IDC Foresees Bullish Growth in Server Market
IDC this week issued its prediction that the server market will continue on its bullish growth path through at least 2008. It foresees a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.8 percent during the next five years, resulting in a $60.8 billion market in 2008. This year alone, the research firm estimates worldwide spending for servers will increase 5 percent to $53 billion.
From a regional perspective, the United States will continue to hold the greatest share of the worldwide server market for the next five years. Western Europe and Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) will follow. IDC expects the strongest growth will come from Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the Asia/Pacific region. According to its forecast, the two countries will realize a CAGR in excess of 6.5 percent.
Linux and the blade server market will also be hot growth areas. The blade server market is expected to reach $9 billion by 2008 and will represent nearly 29 percent of server units shipped by the end of the five years. Linux-based servers will represent approximately 29 percent of all server shipped and about $9.7 billion in revenues. Windows will continue its reign, capturing 60 percent and $22.7 billion in revenue.
Apache Bridges Module for Release
The Apache Object/Relational Bridge (OJB) came one step closer to a production release, with the Apache Software Foundation’s (ASF’s) release of version 1.0rc7 early this week. The ASF said 1.0rc7 is the final pre-version 1.0 release candidate.
ObJectRelationalBridge (OJB) is an object relational mapping tool that enables transparent persistence for Java Objects against relational databases. It is a subproject of the Apache DB Project.
OJB is designed to run on a large range of applications, from embedded systems to rich client application to multitier, J2EE-based architectures. It integrates smoothly into J2EE Application servers, supporting JNDI lookup of datasources.
OJB comes with full JTA and JCA Integration. It can be used within JSPs, Servlets, and SessionBeans, and it provides special support for Bean Managed EntityBeans.
OJB uses an XML-based object relational mapping tool residing in a dynamic MetaData layer that can be manipulated at runtime through a simple Meta-Object-Protocol (MOP) to change the behavior of the persistence kernel. OJB offers several advanced object relational features, including Object Caching, lazy materialization through virtual proxies, and a distributed lock-management with configurable Transaction-Isolation Levels.
Changes in release candidate 7 include the following:
- New Apache Forrest generated Web site
- OJB.properties file has changed
- Logging settings moved to separate OJB-logging.properties file
- Logging initialization is now decoupled from OJB initialization
- Renamed and moved internal package org.apache.ojb.odmg.transaction to org.apache.ojb.broker.transaction.tm
